My First Global HR Stint: UAE Edition The global assignment took me to Ras Al Khaimah with Star Cement, UltraTech’s overseas business. It was my first time living outside India, and what could have been overwhelming became exciting thanks to the supportive team and familiar faces at the plant. Working with colleagues from Nepal, Sri Lanka, Oman, the UAE, and the Philippines opened my eyes to how differently people think, work, and communicate. It reshaped how I look at HR and what it means to build people practices that work across cultures. One of my key projects was designing a talent framework to support Emiratization, the UAE’s effort to increase local participation in private‑sector roles. It pushed me to understand a new country’s context, expectations, and workforce dynamics. My international stint in Indonesia gave me a close view of how a manufacturing business operates. Working on an inventory management system took me beyond spreadsheets and into procurement, godowns, production, quality and marketing. Understanding how each team’s priorities shaped outcomes was a key learning. Moving to a new country came with its own challenges, but the support system made the transition smooth and helped me stay focused on learning and contributing. Finance Leadership Program has given me a wide range of experiences across Aditya Birla Group businesses over the last 12 years. My first year included four different stints across Metals, Cement, Financial Services, and Pulp & Fibre which helped me understand how varied businesses function within the Group. My role at Hindalco, Renukoot, provided hands‑on exposure to manufacturing operations and helped me build a solid foundation in accounts, MIS, and internal controls. This experience instilled discipline, attention to detail and a strong appreciation for execution at the shop-floor level. In 2016, I moved to Business Review Council, where working closely with multiple Group businesses gave me a broader view of performance management and strategic decision‑making. The exposure during this phase significantly shaped how I analyse business issues and think through growth challenges. Thereafter, leading the MIS function in the CFI Sector helped me deepen my FP&A experience and develop team‑handling skills. Currently, at Birla Opus, I am part of a start‑up environment that involves building systems and processes from the ground up bringing together learnings from my operational, strategic and leadership roles. Overall, the FLP journey has allowed me to move from hands‑on operational roles to more strategic and people‑led responsibilities with each phase adding a distinct learning to my professional journey. As part of the Aditya Birla Group Leadership Program, I spent four months in Thailand with Aditya Birla Chemicals in a Sales & Marketing role far outside my comfort zone. From exploring new global markets in the food additives segment to learning international marketing tools and strategies, the experience was a steep but rewarding journey. What made it truly special were the mentors and colleagues who helped me navigate a new country, culture, and workplace with ease. Beyond work, Thailand’s festivals, food, and vibrant landscapes enriched the experience even more. This stint made me more independent, adaptable, and globally aware. The FLP Program was the launchpad that helped me transition from strong finance fundamentals to functional leadership. The rotations provided a panoramic view of how value is created and governed across the Group, and that breadth directly enabled my moves—first into the Chairman’s Office and later into the role of Head – FP&A at Novel Jewels. The experiences I gained—solving business problems, bringing structure to ambiguity, and engaging with senior stakeholders—became the backbone for later milestones, including working directly with the Group promoters and building the FP&A function from the ground up at Novel Jewels. My time in the Chairman’s Office was a masterclass in structured thinking and executive‑level judgment. Expectations around clarity were exceptionally high: I had to distill complex business realities across diverse sectors such as real estate, paints, F&B, and copper into crisp, insight‑ready narratives. Reviews moved at an intense cadence, which sharpened my ability to separate signal from noise, anticipate deeper layers of questioning, and anchor every recommendation in data‑backed logic. This environment trained me to think like an owner—an approach that continues to shape how I problem‑solve today. Similarly, working closely with the CFO at Novel Jewels refined both my operating rhythm and leadership style. I saw firsthand what it means to lead high‑stakes initiatives with accountability and calm. The mentorship I received taught me how to simplify decisions for senior leadership, build systems that scale, and uphold excellence even under pressure. Together, these mentors instilled in me a deep sense of ownership, a bias for action, and the confidence to navigate complex, high‑velocity business environments. Embedding digital tools into manufacturing operations Joining the Engineering Leadership Program was a turning point in my learning journey, bridging classroom concepts with real-world manufacturing challenges. While my campus learning equipped me with conceptual knowledge, it was on the shop floor at GCA Nagda where these concepts truly came alive. Working closely with operations and maintenance teams gave me first-hand exposure to the realities of running a large-scale manufacturing plant, where precision, consistency, and regulatory compliance are critical. During this shop floor exposure, I observed that monitoring data transfer to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) portal was handled manually. CPCB requires plants to continuously send data on flue gas emissions and effluent treatment to ensure environmental standards are met. To comply with this requirement, engineers had to log in multiple times a day to verify whether data was being uploaded correctly. This process was repetitive, time-consuming, and prone to human error, creating compliance risk. With guidance from my mentor, I explored how digital tools could simplify this process. I developed a Python-based automation tool that automatically logged transmission status, and triggered email alerts whenever an issue was detected. This shift allowed engineers to move from continuous manual monitoring to exception-based action. The results were clear, data availability went up to over 95%, well above the 85% compliance requirement, while significantly reducing manual effort.
