In an era of rapid change and an increasingly uncertain business environment, the question for young leaders is clear: How do you build trust, establish credibility, and design systems that are both robust and resilient? My time in Thailand with Birla Carbon was truly enriching. Understanding a business in theory is one thing, but being on the ground in an international setting gave me a far deeper perspective. I witnessed firsthand how the supply chain operates across countries like Japan, Korea, and China, and that exposure helped me appreciate the complexity of managing a business on a global scale. My role involved engaging with cross-functional teams from overseas, India, and China. This brought a different kind of responsibility—one that was both a challenge and an opportunity to learn and evolve on the go. Collaborating across geographies taught me the importance of adaptability and clear communication in driving meaningful outcomes. Equally valuable was the cultural experience. Working in Thailand taught me to respect local sentiments and appreciate different ways of working. For my second stint as part of the Aditya Birla Group Leadership Programs, I had the incredible opportunity to work with Novelis—which also meant traveling to the US for the project. Relocating to a new country came with its share of challenges, but even more excitement and learning. At Novelis, I gained a deeper understanding of the aluminium industry, particularly the Continuous Casting and Paint operations. My mandate was to estimate the profitability of the paint lines and evaluate the existing pricing structure. The experience pushed me to connect the dots between sales, operations, and commercial strategy. Engaging closely with cross-functional and plant teams was truly enriching—it enabled me to understand on-ground realities and deliver meaningful outcomes within a short timeframe. Beyond the project itself, the stint broadened my perspective on cultural nuances and differences in ways of working between the US and India; and beyond work I had to embrace the way of life in the US and navigate differences, especially the way services like cabs, salons etc. are seen and comfort factors like 10-minute delivery do not exist there - an experience that I will carry forward in my journey. ’ve always admired Koreans for the beauty and simplicity they bring to everything they do. Experiencing it firsthand was something else. I couldn’t have gone at a better time—Seoul was painted in the prettiest hues of autumn. No matter how cold it got as we approached winter, people changed their coats and the brands they wore, but not their habits. It was hard to miss the sincerity of the store clerk coming in for their shift at -11°C on a Friday night. And I’m not exaggerating when I say they’d drink an iced Americano even if they were down with a cold. They value everybody’s time—and their fitness too. When I went hiking on Baegundae Peak, every second person I saw was 50+ (or older), since everyone there looks younger than their age. This stint gave me the opportunity to work with people from all over the world—China, Spain, Indonesia, Finland, France, and the Netherlands. Our recent Consumer Behavior Workshop (B2C) brought together ABGLPs from Cement, Paints, Novel Jewels Ltd., Apparels and Financial Services. Participants uncovered evolving behaviours and preferences of digital consumers, trends in digital engagement, and their impact on businesses.
