Deori Kala taught us that development is never just about tools or infrastructure. It is about the choices people make, and those choices are shaped by experience, memory and trust. Farmers who hesitated to invest in poultry were not resisting change. They were remembering past uncertainties, weighing risks, and protecting what little they had. In the weekly haats, we understood why temporary stalls felt safer and more attractive than permanent shops. It was not a lack of aspiration but a preference for familiarity, accessibility and control. Here, economics met culture, and behaviour told us more than numbers ever could. What Deori Kala showed us is that progress must fit into the grain of daily life. The most effective interventions do not impose new realities, they grow from what people already know and believe. My international stint with Novelis, Atlanta, USA, was a defining chapter in my Aditya Birla Group Leadership Program journey — one that stretched my boundaries both personally and professionally. Having spent most of my life in Lucknow, this experience was not only about adapting to a new workplace but also about embracing a completely different culture, lifestyle, and mindset. At Novelis, I worked on projects focused on pricing strategy for the automotive sector and transportation cost optimization. These initiatives required a deep dive into market dynamics and data-driven financial modeling to identify areas for improvement. Collaborating with cross-functional teams helped me understand the interplay between commercial strategy, operations, sales, and logistics — ultimately shaping solutions that balanced profitability with efficiency. The experience strengthened my analytical skills and gave me firsthand exposure to strategic decision-making in a global business context. Adjusting to life in a new country came with its share of challenges. From navigating a new cultural environment to understanding different work etiquettes and communication styles, each day brought new learnings. What initially seemed daunting soon became empowering — teaching me patience, empathy, and confidence in unfamiliar situations. Looking back, I am deeply grateful to the ABGLP program for giving me the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone.
